contamination.
Presenter: Sophie Wood,

Vapour Intrusion Workshop -
25th August 2010
ACLCA NSW is pleased to
announce that we are holding a Vapour Intrusion workshop in Sydney
on Wednesday 25th August. The workshop is being presented by
Todd McAlary, Geosyntec Consultants, USA, and Greg Davis,
CSIRO.
Vapour intrusion to
indoor air is often the exposure pathway of greatest concern for
human health risks at sites with volatile organic compounds in soil
and groundwater.
This workshop will
provide valuable information to help environmental professionals
assess and manage such risks, and learn from almost two decades of
practical international experience.
November 2010
meeting.
Matt Welsh, GHD, will be giving
the presentation - "Landfills - a special kind of contaminated
site."
Matt will discuss the
unique conditions prevailing at landfill sites which need to be
considered when investigating, assessing and preparing future
remedial strategies for these sites.
February 2010
meeting
New TPH/TRH HSLs - their
application within environmental site assessment and within the
laboratory.
Presentation by Amanda Lee
(AECOM), David Springer (Envirolab) and Danny Slee (National
Measurement Institute).
April 2010
meeting
Topic - Responsibilities of the
Principal Contractor by Michael Dunbavan, Coffey
Environments
The usual role of ACLCA Members
on remediation sites has been as environmental consultant appointed
by a Client (site owner or operator) to direct and validate
remediation works which are conducted by a Civil Contractor who is
appointed separately by the same Client. Typically the Civil
Contractor was appointed as Principal Contractor for the works.
Former service station sites and petroleum depots are being
divested as the petroleum retail sector changes. Petroleum
companies are moving toward a different model for site remediation
in which environmental consulting companies, such as ACLCA Members,
are being asked to take on the role of Principal Contractor.
This role carries important OH&S responsibilities that
ACLCA Members must recognise and accept as Principal Contractor and
will be outlined in the presentation.
May 2010
meeting:
Tracey Bauer and Simon Gracie
from EESI Contracting gave a presentation on two different remedial
techniques:
- Bioremediation with
Various Case Studies, and
- Insitu Chemical
Oxidation of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in western
Melbourne.
June 2010
meeting:
Barbara Campany, GHD. Barbara
is an industry specialist in stakeholder and conflict management
with more than 16 years’ experience in high profile and often
controversial major projects where communities, stakeholder groups
and organisations are often divided. With exposure to numerous
remediation projects where communities have been impacted by
contaminated land Barbara is well placed to share some of her
insights with regard to engaging communities about potential health
and environmental risks, how perceptions of risk are shaped, and
what happens at the grass roots level when there is a lack of
effective risk communication. A number of case studies will be
discussed.
July 2010
meeting:
The presentation will discuss
the current status of asbestos in soil assessment, management and
OHS in relation to asbestos in soils. A key area of
discussion will be the WA Asbestos in Soils guidelines and their
integration into the new NEPM document.
The following key people will
be presenting -
1.
Linda Apthorpe, Senior
Occupational Hygienist, (Pickford and Rhyder Consulting, Sydney).
Linda is a key author of Australian Standard AS4964 ‘Method
for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples,’
(2004). Linda also presented at the Cleanup09 conference in
relation to asbestos laboratory analysis. Linda’s
presentation will give an overview of the AS4964 method and also
pros/cons and limitations of the method (including detection
limits).
2.
Cameron Hunter, Senior
Industrial Hygienist (Prensa Pty Ltd, Melbourne) – Cameron is a
Senior Industrial Hygienist with over 20 years of experience in
asbestos assessment, risk management and remediation. Cameron
will present on the current state of asbestos OHS regulations,
asbestos in the updated NEPM and how this relates in practical
terms to asbestos in soil management.

Hunter sub-branch meeting -
Tuesday 16th August 2010
Case studies in risk
communication, presented by Barbara Campany, GHD.
Barbara is an industry
specialist in stakeholder and conflict management with more than 16
years’ experience in high profile and often controversial major
projects where communities, stakeholder groups and organisations
are often divided. With exposure to numerous remediation projects
where communities have been impacted by contaminated land Barbara
is well placed to share some of her insights with regard to
engaging communities about potential health and environmental
risks, how perceptions of risk are shaped, and what happens at the
grass roots level when there is a lack of effective risk
communication. A number of case studies will be
discussed.
August 2011
meeting
Adrian Heggie from
Parsons Brinckerhoff will present a discussion on Vapour Intrusion
Investigations according to the New NEPM.
Adrian has been carrying
out vapour intrusion measurements studies and vapour risk
assessments since 2002 and has presented his research work at the
US EPA’s Vapour Intrusion Workshops and conferences in San Diego,
Indianapolis and Chicago since 2004. His presentation will
explain the changes that the new NEPM will introduce to the way
vapour intrusion risk assessments are conducted in Australia.
He will discuss how the new soil vapour HSLs and HILs were
derived, how to use them, and associated issues.
SEPTEMBER 2011
meeting
Colin McKay from Environmental
Earth Sciences gave a presentation on:
The importance of chemical form
for PAH investigation and clean up.
Remediation is all about
reducing risk. Risk represented by PAHs depends on the
chemical form and availability of those PAHs. Availability
represents increased risk but also increased opportunities for
remediation. This presentation looks at types of PAHs and why
their risk differs, and provides case studies of PAH bioremediation
projects that demonstrate this reality.
1-day Seminar -
Introduction to Monitored Natural Attenuation
ACLCA NSW conducted a
1-day introductory course on Monitored Natural Attenuation
presented by Todd Wiedemeier of T.H. Wiedemeier and Associates
(www.thwa.com) on Friday 21st October 2011 at Mercure Hotel, 818
George Street, Sydney.
This one day course
provided an introduction to the theory, concepts and application of
monitored natural attenuation and enhanced bioremediation for
groundwater remediation and management relevant to those working in
the contaminated sites industry. The course contained a mix
of theory and practical application, using industry relevant
examples and case studies.
